5 Signs Water Is Already Behind Your Stucco

Smoothing the finish coat under the eaves

Stucco rarely leaks like a roof leaks. Water gets behind the wall through failed sealant, cracked finish, or bad flashing, then works quietly for months. By the time you see evidence, the story is already in progress. Here are the five signs worth acting on.

1. Staining below windows

Dark or chalky streaks running down from window corners mean water is entering at the sill or the sealant joints and washing through the wall face. The window perimeter, not the stucco field, is almost always the culprit.

2. Bubbling or peeling paint

Paint bubbles when moisture pushes from behind. On painted stucco this is the wall exhaling water it should never have absorbed. Repainting over it traps the problem and buys it time to grow.

3. Soft or hollow-sounding areas

Tap the wall. Solid stucco sounds dense; saturated or detached stucco sounds hollow and can feel soft under pressure. This means the base coats or the bond to the lath is compromised.

4. Musty smell or interior staining

When the signs show up inside, drywall stains, musty closets on exterior walls, the water has crossed the whole assembly. This is urgent, because framing and insulation are now involved.

5. Rust streaks

Orange bleed-through means the metal lath or fasteners behind the finish are corroding. Metal only rusts where water lives. Common near the coast, and always worth a professional look.
