Stucco Cracks: Which Ones Matter and Which Ones Don't

Hand-troweling the finish coat

Every stucco house in California has cracks somewhere. Most are harmless. A few are the wall telling you something important. The pattern is the message.

Hairline cracks: cosmetic

Fine cracks thinner than a credit card, often around windows and doors, are the finish coat relieving normal stress. Watch them, seal them at your next repaint or re-coat, and do not lose sleep.

Spider or map cracking: aging finish

Web-like networks across a whole wall usually mean the finish coat is aging or was applied over a weak base. Individually harmless, collectively a sign the wall wants a re-coat before water starts finding the network.

Stair-step cracks: pay attention

Cracks that step diagonally, often from window corners, track movement in the framing or foundation. One small one after a hot summer is common. Growing, widening, or multiplying stair-steps deserve a professional look at the cause, not just the symptom.

Bulges and separations: call now

Stucco that bulges, sounds hollow across large areas, or separates at the bottom edge has usually detached from its lath, and water is typically involved. This is the one crack category where waiting costs real money, because the repair grows with every rain.
